No one at that time could imagine that owing to thistradition of craftsmen St Laurent would become the heart of "espadrilles" manufacturing.
Even so, around 1860, Joseph Sans introduced powered looms to his native village. Then, he succeeded in manufacturing the rope tapes used for the soles, which were still handmade with hempen tow.
This new process was a great opportunity for the Sans & Garcerie Company which soon became the leader in rope-soled sandals manufacturing, dealing with the whole of Catalonia.
